This month, we’re teaming up with Bay Area legend Four Barrel CoffeeFour Barrel is featuring two different espressos: Friendo Blendo Espresso & Ethiopia Bulga.

We’re super excited abut this month—not only is it the first time we’re sending out two different coffees, but the Ethiopia Bulga that Four Barrel chose is an element within the Friendo Blendo—so needless to say, there are some great opportunities for taste and palate development by way of comparing and contrasting the two espressos. In addition, Four Barrel has a special relationship with Bulga—something you’ll want to read more about below.

From Four Barrel

When using our espresso, we like 1 part espresso to 1.5 part liquid yield. And while it’s tastiest 7-10 days off roast, we figure you’re so good at this you could probably make it work any day.

Below, you’ll find some more information about the coffees we’re sending out, including tasting notes, brewing specs, and a little more about the coffees themselves—both the Ethiopia Bulga and Friendo Blendo.

Ethiopia Bulga

We’ve been there since the beginning with this coffee. Washed in a wild river & dried in the edenic Worka countryside, this co-op grown heirloom coffee is roasted to accentuate its versatile sweetness and body.

Flavor Notes: Wild strawberry brightness & sweetness with light citrus undertones, floral mid-tones, and an apricot finish.

When we say that we’ve been with Bulga since the beginning, here’s what we mean:

We visited Bulga the very first week its 350 members brought cherry to their clean and shiny new mill. Even back then, the farmers and pickers had obviously adopted a quality-over-quantity ethos: the cherry delivery was… cherry, among the best we’d seen in Ethiopia.

This pre-sorting ensured that this venture was totally on point from day one. These people know a thing or two about starting from scratch; their families had settled in these mountains during the droughts of the 1980s. It was an honor to witness these first steps in a new directions.

We weren’t the only outsiders there. The non-governmental organization TechnoServe had helped the families of Bulga arrange loans and entice local coffee pros from nearby operations. But this operation was above and beyond the combined expertise of the all-star attendees.

We’ve visited often since then, but that first trip from 2013 still sticks out. Bulga felt edenic, gracious and real. The people there were working hard to make something for themselves. The quality and care of their coffee is going to take them there. We remain grateful to be on the receiving end of their efforts, and to have spent those early days with them, in their new home.

Friendo Blendo Espresso

Friendo Blendo espresso is a staple of our cafes. It’s a blend of Colombia Andino, Ethiopia Biftu Gudina, and Ethiopia Bulga and is comprised of 100% washed coffees grown between 1650 – 2100 meters.

Flavor Notes:
Citrus flavors swan dive into fresh berry full forward fold, which jumps or walks back into down dog, then ascends into a toffee sweetness sun salutation. Swan dive.
